Dear Yang Heping (Fred Engst):
We are greatly shocked to learn with deep sorrow of the passing away of your mother Joan Hinton. She was the respected and close friend of the Chinese people, who had dedicated her life to China’s revolution and development. Joan was a justice-upholding and truth-seeking woman fighter who deserved admiration and praise. We cherish very much our friendship with your mother and father, which dated back to the 1940s. Joan and Sid were decent and enthusiastic revolutionaries, who thought nothing but hard working and dedication to the cause of emancipation of mankind. Her passing is a great loss not only to your family but also to us, her friends in China.
Joan is eternally living in our hearts.
Please convey our deepest condolences to your family and relatives.
Huang Hua and He Liliang, in great grief
